XY Content’s latest project for Equality North Carolina is a short film called “Boycott Band: The Return of One More Wish”. Directed by Habib Yazdi, the short film was made in collaboration with North Carolina’s very own Mckinney Advertising Agency to combat the controversial HB2 bill.
The basis of HB2 is that it keeps transgender individuals from using the bathroom of the gender they associate with, and forcing them to use the one indicated on their birth certificate. But beneath the bathroom component, the scarier part of the law is that LGBTQ people are not included in anti-discrimination laws. This means someone could be fired for being gay. Or not hired for being transgender. The law also shortened the window in which people can file complaints about discrimination from three years to one.
To shed light on this act, we created a short film that would highlight the absurdity of this act. First we created a “fake boy band” that was trying to take advantage of the empty stages in North Carolina left behind by boycotters.
Original music was created by Storefront Music specifically for the band, including such 90’s hits like, “Make Three Wishes“, “Hit Me” and “Curfew“. Local North Carolinian musicians were also featured including founder of Merge Records and bassist for SuperChunk, Laura Ballance and Fan Modine’s Alex Maiolo.
The fake band’s persona even spanned into YouTube and the Twitterverse. They even made the front cover of IndyWeek! As of press time, the film has been featured in Adweek, HuffingtonPost, Funnyordie, Campaign UK, Brokelyn, Filmshortage etc..
